Favorite Things Friday || Pencils, Pens, Pastels, Paints

As most of you know, I love crocheting, knitting, and sewing. Something you may not know about me is that I also love to paint and draw too! I started drawing, like more than just stick figures or people with mitten hands, when I was about 13 or 14. I still have the first picture I drew when I actually realized that I could do it. I drew a picture of Julie Andrews as Maria in The Sound of Music using a picture in a book I had for reference. I thought I turned out alright so I showed my mom and she seemed pretty surprised and my impressed. That gave me the confidence to keep going. (Ha! unintentional "I Have Confidence" reference.)

Pretty soon I had drawn through the 12 months of photos in my Audrey Hepburn calendar.

Eventually I took a couple of art classes in high school and in college. I started experimenting with different media, charcoal, pen and ink, pastels, water colors. Here is a charcoal drawing of Liza Minnelli and the front driver's side corner of a Ford Mustang that I drew for a gradient project in one of my art classes. The majority of my artwork could easily be classified as "stars and cars."

My first pastel drawing surprised me when I finally finished and focused on the entire page. I don't think any of the pastel projects that followed have matched it.

Watercolors were fun. I always have to have a large scrap piece of paper next to me so I can test and retest my brush to make sure I get the right shade when I put it on the actual painting. The majority of water colors I've done have been cars. I actually  used graphite backed paper to trace the outlines of vehicles from ads in a vintage LIFE magazine onto the watercolor paper because I just wanted to worry about the painting part, not the drawing part.

I have been itching to get my paints out again recently but I haven't had, or made, the time to be able to do it yet.
I made a New Year's resolution post where I said I wanted to draw some more, which I did...in January. Well, my work schedule is getting a little swapped around for the summer, so we will see what sort of time that may or may not open up for getting out my art supplies and seeing what happens!

I was thinking just now about how I finally get to use my talents to serve others working at a craft store, learning from and/or teaching customers tips and tricks on how to go about certain crafts. Of course at the library, making the canopy, having made book display posters, and story time name tags, and so many other fun things for work!

"Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms." 1 Peter 4:10

What's in a Name?

I feel like I need a name for Tuesday posts because "Favorite Things Friday" has a name. It really it that and my unusual need to be pretty organized which has turned into more of an organized chaos as of late.

Anywho...

I'm beginning to accumulate my WIP pile again. I have the gargantuafghan, still nearly done, but not quite and these three beauties. Well, two. The two blue-green color projects are from pattern.

At the top there is the lovely Glitz at the Ritz shawl which is slightly more finished than the last time I posted about it. Middle is the Kerry Shrug. Both patterns can be found on Ravelry. The bottom picture is a result of last night's efforts to crochet a realistic (for the most part) looking bluebird. I tried in both 2 and 3 dimensions. There are still a lot of changes to be made to both patterns.

Oh, I almost forgot...I am so excited for the Medieval themed Summer Reading Program at the library! The main reason why I am so excited is because my boss asked me to sew a canopy from a pattern she bought. I get to sew at work! Which, in a way, this means I'll get paid for sewing. That makes me a professional seamstress, right? Ha, maybe not! I think I'll forgo that title until I see how this canopy turns out.

Favorite Things Friday || We Interrupt Your Friday Evening For...

A brief announcement.

When you go click the little blue "Jill" at the bottom of each post, it takes you to my blogger profile. Or click where I just typed "blogger profile" ...either one. There's something a little new there.

Beneath the somewhat pensive picture of moi, you should see the words "contact me" and beneath that, "email" in blue. If you click on it you can now send email messages to thewizardofoddsandends@gmail.com!!

This means my blog and Etsy shop now have their very own email! Isn't technology so nice?

Sorry, I think I might have given this post more build up than it's worth. Hey, it is pretty exciting! If you have any questions that you'd rather not post in the comments or any requests about crafting projects, or even post topics, or you'd like to show me things you're working on, feel free to send me an email because I would love so see/hear from you!

I would also like to note that the banner on both my blog and Etsy shop were made by Hilary, who has an incredible eye for and talent with Adobe Illustator! Unfortunately we haven't really been in contact for a while, but I am thankful that she made the banner for me a few years ago and that my technology skills are finally to the level that I have been able to get said banner on a couple of my pages.

I'm Still Here and Vintage Fashion Shopping Link!

The last few weeks have been hectic with filling in for multiple library coworkers when a monster of a cold kept some of the staff out for nearly a week, then traveling (and thankfully not catching the cold) the week after that, and then coming back to work gearing up for the Summer Reading Program which promises to be quite an exciting and busy event!

For the next few months, August first is the last day of the SRP, my posts may not fall on regular days. You've probably noticed that happening already!! I will try my hardest to still post twice a week! Without further ado, here is Tuesday's post on Thursday. A little less craft oriented too, but I don't think anyone will mind much.

Anne of Green Gables is a wonderful book series. If you have never read it you NEED to. The first two movies are also lovely, the Continuing Story...well, it didn't follow the books and was just not my cup of tea. Though, it was really neat to see Megan Follows, Jonathan Crombie, and Schuyler Grant all grown up.

Because of my love for the books and films, I liked the Anne of Green Gables Facebook page. Which often posts links to the Shop at Sullivan website which is affiliated with Sullivan Entertainment, the production company that made the Anne movies.

Right now on the Shop at Sullivan Site they are selling costumes that are similar to the Anne era and some film worn costumes from other Sullivan Entertainment series like Wind at My Back. Which is also a very good series you should try to see! It is so much fun to see all of the beautiful vintage looking clothes they are offering right now for fairly decent prices!

Favorite Things Friday || I Love Slippers!

I guess I'll have to start doing some preplanning for these Friday posts.  Pardon the picture quality. That is a result of this last minute post as well. I do have a new camera, just haven't used it for the blog yet. So, today's favorite thing at the current time of 11:32 pm is slippers. Probably very close to 99% of the time that I am in the house I have slippers on. I'm relatively organized. Though, I've got some yarn overflow from my closet happening right now, but this isn't about that...I don't like to wear shoes in my room.

Shoes go in a very specific corner right by my door when I get home from work or errands or they go in my shoe hanger in the closet, but I take them off at my door.  Wow, I've collected a lot of shoes...

Anyway, two pairs of significantly worn slippers go right next to my bed. I hAve a third pair on standby. One hard rubber soled pair for walking all over the house, in the basement, etc. and one soft pair with non-slip soles for just lounging around. ,y room....And after this little post I have come to realize that I have a small obsession with footwear. Really though, I. Love. Slippers.

Beautiful Blog Award!!

I had planned to have this post up last Friday, but I was away for the weekend and never got around to posting. Sorry! So, here it is for Tuesday. I am happy to say that Ireland of Ireland Rhea and Paige from Sunday Best and All the Rest nominated me for the Beautiful Blogger award! A HUGE thank you to Ireland and Paige for this nomination!! :)

Here are the rules if you decide to accept this award:
1. Thank the blogger who awarded you
2. Answer the ten questions he/she asked
3. Nominate ten bloggers to receive the award
4. Ask them ten questions
5. Let them know they've been awarded

Ireland's Questions:
1. What was your hardest subject in school?
Geometry. I do not miss that class one bit.

2. Do you play an instrument, and if so, which one?
I play a little of a lot of instruments. Flute, violin, harmonica, guitar, piano, voice if that counts. I think that's all.

3. What is your favorite color? And you have to pick ONE. No cop-outs.
My favorite color is probably blue. It looks nice when I wear it and I can wear it pretty much any season depending on the shade of blue.

4. Flip-flops or boots?
Flip-flops they are just so nice to wear. When you wear them that usually means it's WARM outside, or you can just slip them on if you're going out to get the mail or whatever and they're so inexpensive and come in all kinds of colors!

5. Football, soccer, or tennis?
I'll have to say tennis, though I hardly ever play or watch any of these.

6. Have you ever taken a self-defense course?
I have. They're pretty interesting and I'm sure they must be pretty useful.

7. What is one weak area of your life that you are working to improve?
Definitely my prayer life. I do not pray as much as could I'm trying to spend a little more time with God that way than just reading His Word.

8. Bible passage you are loving right now?
I have always loved Psalm 121

9. How would you describe your personal style?
It's blend. I try to incorporate a lot of classic pieces that I can wear for years.

10. What's your favorite way to work out? Again, no cop-outs. :)
I haven't worked out in a long time, I need to start again. I used to have a routine I loved. That included just low impact exercises like push ups, lunges, and planks.

Paige's Questions:
1. How would you describe your personal style?
See number 9 above. :) Though, I feel like to add to that I should mention my fairly recent obsession with maxi skirts and that I should do a small ThredUp haul or something like that for next Friday's post. Hmmmm.....

2. What was your first pet?
A tabby cat named Tigger after the Winnie the Pooh's friend.

3. What is your ancestry (e.g. German, Italian)?
French and English

4. Dill pickles or sweet pickles ;) ?
Sweet Gherkins!!!

5. What Bible character do you relate to the most (it can be character, life experiences, or anything like that)? That' skins of difficult off the top of my head. I'll have to say Martha. She was so worried to have a things just right for Jesus when she did not need to worry.

6. What is the first favorite scripture verse that comes to your mind?
Psalm 121:1

7. Do you have any food allergies?
No, thankfully. My UC does cause some dietary restrictions, but I don't have any allergies.

8. You would be really excited if you woke up tomorrow morning to the smell of ____ cooking.
I don't think I would be really excited. I always like to have a fairly small breakfast. A spread of cooked breakfast yummies doesn't appeal to me, well, at the moment anyway.

9. What are you looking forward to this summer?
My first Summer Reading Program working at a library. I hear it's pretty exciting!

10. What is one thing you've learned from blogging?
Just to be myself.

Here is a is kind of a mishmash of random questions. I also only picked a few blogs to nominate. It is much harder than one would think to pick 10 that haven't already been nominated.

Questions for the nominees:
1. What is your favorite article of clothing you own?
2. Do you have any hidden talents?
3. Do you give yourself any clothes shopping "rules" that you must stick to?
4. What colors do you see the most of when you open your closet?
5. Have you ever refashioned a piece of clothing? If so, what did you make?
6. If you had the chance to share just one Bible verse with someone, which would you choose?
7. Do you have any pets?
8. What is your favorite vintage/antique item you own?
9. Do you know more than one language (ASL, Braille, etc. count too.)
10. Flats or heels?

Shawl I Tell You What I Think of You?

You don't mind if I recycle a picture do you? I'm STILL working on this.

I knew I was slower at knitting than crocheting, but this is just ridiculous! I'm still working on the Glitz at the Ritz shawl pattern. The instructions are fairly straight forward and understandable for someone like me who doesn't really do all that much knitting. Thank goodness for YouTube tutorials on knitting stitches! It's very pretty so far, from what I can tell, even though I did give up on counting stitches at a few spots. If I'm not mistaken, the first time you count what's on a needle you should have 217 stitches!! Remember, this is sock yarn... That's 217 tiny, skinny, little stitches that you have to count!

I am determined to see this project through! I'm on the star lace section now. I just have a feeling not every stitch is going to line up where it should. I guess that's some motivation to keep working on it, just to see if it all actually lines up.

Well, that's what was on the needles this week!
Did anyone get the title reference to a deleted song from The King and I (1956)? ;)

Favorite Things Friday (Saturday) || Classic Movies

G, H, and I. That's where I am right now working my way through the library's collection of movies and picking out all the classic films to watch. I actually started by actor/actress, first starting with Doris Day then Deborah Kerr. I decided it would be much simpler to just go from A to Z.

This is what I have out now:

I have definitely discovered a few new favorites over the past month or so! Though, I think my favorite will always be The Sound of Music. I saw it for the first time when I was three! In fact, the case is on my headboard right now because I just watched it last week too! Many of you have probably guessed by now, given the blog name, that The Wizard of Oz is also a favorite. I love just about all of Judy Garland's films.

I don't know what it is about classic films, musicals, and the big band era. The era that contains basically all my favorite things; songs, style, cinema... They certainly do not make movies like they used to! Or clothes, or music. Anyway, you get the idea.

Do most of your style and entertainment preferences come from the same era or would you consider your taste to be more eclectic?

Sorry for the late post!

Liebster Award!

Today my blog was nominated for a Liebster Award...twice!!

The Liebster award is a fun award given to bloggers with 200 followers or less to encourage them to keep up their great work and to help others to discover those lesser known blogs. Thank you to both Ireland from Ireland Rhea and Paige from Sunday Best and All the Rest for nominating my blog!

Liebster Award Rules-if you choose to participate:)
Acknowledge the blog that nominated you.
Answer the 11 questions the nominating blogger created.
List 11 bloggers with less than 200 followers that deserve some recognition.
Write 11 questions for them to answer.
Notify them they've been nominated.

Answers to Ireland's Questions:

1. What is the one thing you do everyday, almost without fail?
The past few weeks for breakfast I've been having a plain bagel with cream cheese and either dried cranberries or apricots for breakfast. That's basically breakfast everyday unless we're out of bagels, cream cheese, or dried fruit.

2. What do you like most about where you live?
Everything is in such close proximity. I could ride a bike to both of my jobs!

3. What would you like to accomplish by the end of 2014?
It would be a lot of fun to be able to run my Etsy shop and blog full time by the end of this year, however, I know it would be a TON of hard work too. That's the goal though, if not by the end of this year then maybe next year or the year after that. We'll see what God has planned.

4. What's the last book you read that you would HIGHLY recommend me?
The Story of the Trapp Family Singers by Maria von Trapp is really good and very funny! She has a wonderful sense of humor and talks a lot about her family, their singing, being refugees from Austria during World War 2. She has such a charming way of telling about the experiences God led them through and the opportunities He provided for them in Austria, America, and around the world! (It's the book, that The Sound of Music is based on.)

5. Your favorite style of music?
Traditional hymns, folk music, and just about anything from the swing era. Depends on what I'm in the mood to listen to.

6. One thing about you that you want the world to know?
Galatians 6:14

7. Quick! Pick one. Winter, spring, summer, or fall.
Spring.

8. What is your view on staying healthy... inside and out?
Physically: Mainly I try to eat healthy, for the most part. My sleeping habits are not the greatest. Spiritually: make sure to set aside and spend time with The Lord and in His Word every day.

9. If your blog has to do with fashion, who is your favorite celebrity in terms of style inspiration? If your blog has nothing to do with that, then what is your favorite sport to watch on TV?
I'll answer both since I've made some fashion posts even thought I'm not strictly a fashion blogger. I don't really draw fashion ideas from one celebrity. I often draw inspiration from a lot of classic musical costumes and will try to find things that remind me of a piece of certain costumes I admire.
I don't really watch sports, but I can sit through a baseball game if there' snorting else on tv.

10. Who do you look up to when it comes to keeping the faith?
Jesus. He understands what it is like to be human and yet never sinned.

11. How has your relationship with God changed who you are as a person?
I became a Christian at a young age and I still have shortcomings, but I know that if I repent after I realized I've sinned, I will be forgiven. I guess my relationship with God has caused me to be more forgiving of others too.

Answers to Paige's Questions:

1. Are you a morning person or a night owl?
Definitely a night owl.

2. Do you prefer dogs, cats, both or neither?
I love both!

3. Where did you get your name?
Blog name or real name? My blog name a friend suggested to me when I posted a Facebook status asking friends to help me come up with a name. My real name is just a name my mom liked.

4. Do you have an unusual talent?
Hm...I used to be able to put my legs over my shoulders. I haven't tried it for a very long time.

5. Would you rather show up at an event over-dressed or under-dressed?
Overdressed! I love dressing up and don't care if I'm slightly overdressed.

6. If given a choice, would you rather perform singing, dancing, or playing an instrument?
Singing. Though I would love to learn how to play my violin better.

7. What kind of job do you have (to me, this means anything from a career to getting paid to do chores around the house or babysit your siblings)? I work at a library and a craft store. I really like both my jobs!

8. What was the song you last heard?
Probably "Gonna Fly Now" from Rocky. That's what I set to wake up to on my alarm clock at 6:30am the other day.

9. Food you last ate?
Scrambled eggs with black pepper, cheddar cheese, sausage, and artichoke heart.

10. Part of the Bible you last read?
I just finished reading Esther yesterday.

11. Is there any quality you think the Lord is growing in you right now (e.g., patience, love, trust)? I think He's growing me in a lot of areas right now, patience is definitely one of them.

My Questions for the nominees:

1. What is your favorite pattern to work from? If you don't use patterns, have you ever made a project multiple times?

2. Who taught you your craft(s)?

3. What do you consider your biggest crafting accomplishment?

4. How did you get into blogging?

5. Have you ever made a mistake but manage to salvage the project and make it a success?

6. Where do you find the most inspiration for the things you make?

7. Do you have an Etsy shop? If so, please post the link. :)

8. What is one craft that you would love to learn?

9. Depending on your main hobby, what is your least favorite type of fabric/yarn/paint to work with?

10. What is the longest amount of time you've spent in a craft store or browsing craft supplies online?

11.  What sort of project are you currently working on?

The girls who nominated me have blogs that focus on fashion. I do make posts about fashion, but more often my posts are about crafting so I nominated other craft bloggers for the Liebster Award. :) I'm sort of following suit nominating less than 11 bloggers.

Nominees:
Ashley from Say It Ain't Sew
Megan and Rachel from The Path Less Raveled
Rebecca from Rebecca's Crochet
Judy from Sew Blessed Maw
Hana - Marmota from Marmota's Dress Diaries
