Tuesday Cables || Sew-Bots

Let's see, a blessing today was getting a extra shift at work. Work may not be the most thrilling place to be, but it's always nice to be able to put a little extra money in the bank. :) --and I wouldn't have found out about the adorable twill fabric!

I think I might start  each blog that way from now on. Sort of counting my blessings and sort of just a happy thought or nice thing that has happened that day or sometime during the week.

Now, I know, I'm late again. It is the wee small hours of Wednesday where I am and I am just posting for Tuesday now. I'm going to meet my nephew for the first time soon and he is almost 1 already! Wow that year flew by!! I'm trying to buy a few things that he might need when he's here that can't easily be brought on a plane. I already bought some sippy cups. Well, I'm sure you could bring those on a plane but it not like every kid travels with his own personal supply of sippy cups. Today I bought and sewed a pattern for a travel high chair!

Yesterday (Monday) when I was at work I saw the pattern for a travel high chair and it didn't take much fabric and was really easy to sew. I put it back because it said it should be made from duck cloth, light denim, or twill. I couldn't think of any of those fabrics off the top of my head that would actually make it cute. Actually, I wasn't even sure we had any twill. Ha, not good that I don't know what is in stock!  Today a woman brought a few bolts of fabric up to the cutting counter and one was an adorable kid's twill fabric that had owls wearing baseball caps on it! When I finished cutting her fabric I brought the twill bolt back to see what else there was and saw the robot print. I grabbed the bolt, which had just enough for the pattern left on it, and found the pattern again and happily made my purchase after I punched out.

The pattern was a breeze to sew. It's just one pattern piece and you only have to cut three pieces total. Technically it should take just a couple of hours to complete, but I am a master at getting distracted. During one distracted moment I started singing a song from the Harvey Girls, which I hadn't watched in ages so I finally put in my Harvey Girls DVD and got down to business on the travel high chair...after I took a picture of my TV screen.

I can't get enough of this robot fabric!!

Now, you'll have to use your imagination for this last picture. Unfortunately I didn't have an adorable baby model on hand  so I used a shirt. You get the picture though, right?

I'm so excited for my nephew to use this when he's here!

Favorite Things Friday || Fiber, Metal, Paper

I seem to have my regular Tuesday craft posts mixed up with my Favorite Things Friday posts. It's alright I guess, since it's probably pretty obvious that crafting is one of my favorite things!

I received a mailer from JoAnn Fabrics the other day with a 50% off coupon.  A few days later I got the circular with another 50% off coupon. I was happy, I needed more thread for my serger. I checked my email later and got another 50% off coupon. Now I could save on three of the four spools of overlock thread! Over the next two days I got two more 50% off coupons. I checked the coupon numbers and they were all different. I could use all five!!!

Today, I took my typically coupon-forgetful self to Joann fabrics with ALL of the coupons. So here is my little haul:

Caron simply soft yarn in Pagoda. My dear friend for whom I am knitting the shawl (Is my grammar correct?) is going to some sort of dinner and bought a dress that she thinks would look nice with some sort of shawl or shrug. She loves jewel tones and since I know I won't be through knitting by the party, I grabbed some of this beautiful deep blue green color. I'll be looking up patterns or crocheting one as many of you will be reading this. To be honest, I am really excited to crochet again after slowly knitting for days!

SureLock Overlock thread: I needed some. The small spools that came with my machine are almost gone.

Pin Backs: I needed these to. I actually only needed a couple but all I could find was a 42 pack. It was $2.99 so I figured I can definitely make some cute pins to sell as well.

Belle Buttons by Dritz: Look! They're EDELWEISS!! I love it! I bought one card of these a month or two ago, the only one they had in stock. I plan on making a dirndl someday and using these for the buttons.

One lovely, interesting find today was at work at the library. My town library has been in the same building since the late 1800s and we have the old antique card catalogues still mostly full of cards. When we need some scrap paper someone usually goes and grabs a handful of the cards out of the catalogue.

Today I pulled a card out to write a note on the back of it. Often, before I scribble away I'll look at the front of the card just to see what old book belonged to it. Every card I'd seen so far was typewritten. I was so surprised to turn the card in my hand over to see a book catalogued in such gorgeous penmanship!! I'm assuming someone wrote it out for a new book in 1924, the year written on the card. I haven't done an internet search to find out anything about it yet. Needless to say, I didn't scribble a note on the back of this card, but instead put it in a book a checked out to keep it safe and brought it home. I am still admiring the beautiful handwriting!

Any crafters hoard their coupons before making a shopping trip?
Don't you wish there was still a strong emphasis on penmanship in school?

Hope you have all had a very nice Good Friday!

Blog, Glob, Gob, God

Something I have been thinking about and praying about for a while now is how to incorporate God into my blog. I've posted Bible verses here and there and mentioned God a couple of times, but I feel like He deserves a little more than just a mention here or there. God gave me the talents I have and I want to use them. I love to use my talents and when I do I want to give glory to the One whom it belongs.

I moved about eight months ago and started attending a new church. I went back to my previous church last Sunday evening and was asked to stand up and give a testimony. I had no idea what to say. I started talking about how it has been amazing to see how God has been providing for me even when I had doubts. I talked about how I quit my part time job at a grocery store because it would have taken nearly an hour to drive there from my new house. Within a couple of months I had not one, but TWO new jobs that I really love! I even get to use my craft skills  and knowledge at both jobs!

While my blog has a very small fan base which, honestly, can be kind of discouraging, I am SO thankful for each and every one of my readers. (Especially for my cousin who edited my blog spur of the moment last Friday. Yeah, she's cool. ;) ) This week I didn't do too much crafting because I had more hours at work than usual but I think God might be telling me to keep at this whole crafting thing.

Last week I entered a giveaway just for the fun of it. It was on the Boyer Family Singers Blog for a Sense & Sensibility dress pattern. I had actually completely forgotten about it until I got home from work yesterday and checked my blog feed. I suddenly remembered the giveaway when I saw the blog preview entitled "We Have a Winner!" I skimmed the preview and gasped when I saw my name! There were over 600 entries!! I could not believe it! I am very, very grateful to have won! There will definitely be a blog post about the dress after I've sewn it. That may take a little while, though. I've got a few sort of "back logged" projects that I need to post about soon as well. Like I said last Tuesday, time, technology, and the weather have not all worked out in my favor the past few weeks...but I know Spring is coming!

My First Tutorial...

Since I can't post any pictures of Christmas presents, and that is basically all I am working on at the moment, (Whilst falling way behind on my 365 squares. Ugh.) I have decided it was high time to post a tutorial here and my camera decided it was high time for the batteries to die. Well, I'm done complaining. At least I still have something I can take pictures with.

Thanksgiving is in just a few short hours and I suppose that means I'm late, by retail store standards, getting into the Christmas spirit. The fun thing about working at a children's library is decorating for each season and the accompanying holidays. We haven't deecorated for Christmas yet, but we've been preparing...with discarded books! I'm sure you can find this tutorial elsewhere on the Internet, but I can guarantee you that their photos won't have that fuzzy vintage look that invokes feelings of nostalgia from Christmases past.

Here is it folks, the Christmas Tree Book:

Fold the page over so that the top edge is even with the spine of the book.

Fold page again so that the first folded edge is even with spine.

Fold bottom corner of page even with bottom edge of the book and tuck the corner inside of the triangle.

Repeat...

*Note: I made my tree out of four separate sections of 16 pages and glued the sections together. You can make your tree with as many or as few sections/pages as you like for slightly different looks. It's fun to try with different size books too!
