Favorite Things Friday || Pencils, Pens, Pastels, Paints

As most of you know, I love crocheting, knitting, and sewing. Something you may not know about me is that I also love to paint and draw too! I started drawing, like more than just stick figures or people with mitten hands, when I was about 13 or 14. I still have the first picture I drew when I actually realized that I could do it. I drew a picture of Julie Andrews as Maria in The Sound of Music using a picture in a book I had for reference. I thought I turned out alright so I showed my mom and she seemed pretty surprised and my impressed. That gave me the confidence to keep going. (Ha! unintentional "I Have Confidence" reference.)

Pretty soon I had drawn through the 12 months of photos in my Audrey Hepburn calendar.

Eventually I took a couple of art classes in high school and in college. I started experimenting with different media, charcoal, pen and ink, pastels, water colors. Here is a charcoal drawing of Liza Minnelli and the front driver's side corner of a Ford Mustang that I drew for a gradient project in one of my art classes. The majority of my artwork could easily be classified as "stars and cars."

My first pastel drawing surprised me when I finally finished and focused on the entire page. I don't think any of the pastel projects that followed have matched it.

Watercolors were fun. I always have to have a large scrap piece of paper next to me so I can test and retest my brush to make sure I get the right shade when I put it on the actual painting. The majority of water colors I've done have been cars. I actually  used graphite backed paper to trace the outlines of vehicles from ads in a vintage LIFE magazine onto the watercolor paper because I just wanted to worry about the painting part, not the drawing part.

I have been itching to get my paints out again recently but I haven't had, or made, the time to be able to do it yet.
I made a New Year's resolution post where I said I wanted to draw some more, which I did...in January. Well, my work schedule is getting a little swapped around for the summer, so we will see what sort of time that may or may not open up for getting out my art supplies and seeing what happens!

I was thinking just now about how I finally get to use my talents to serve others working at a craft store, learning from and/or teaching customers tips and tricks on how to go about certain crafts. Of course at the library, making the canopy, having made book display posters, and story time name tags, and so many other fun things for work!

"Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms." 1 Peter 4:10

Short And Sweet

Today, or yesterday now, was a little crazy. I was just getting ready to update my blog. Of course as soon as I sat down my dad called and roughly 6,000,000 things happened at once and I had to start cooking supper. It was awesome. Breakfast for supper. That's simple enough, right?
Well...
I started with the bacon. I cooked it in the oven which I had never done before. Of course the first batch out I tilted the broiler pan (I didn't broil it, that just lets the grease drain really well) and spilled hot grease all over the oven door and just a tiny bit on the element. The drops that hit the element smoked and I stood there frozen for a moment praying they would not catch on fire. I still had to clean up the good amount that spilled on the oven door. I turned off the oven, and turned on the cold water in the sink. I wiped the whole inside of the oven door with wads of paper towels then threw them in the sink under the cold water. My dad got home a few minutes after that incident, at that point I felt safe enough turning the oven back on and cooking the rest of the bacon. No fire ever occurred, thank goodness! Plus I managed to cook the pancakes on a griddle during this whole ordeal without burning them thanks to my lovely brother running into the kitchen when I called for him and flipping the pancakes for me.
Next, I took out a small sauce pan...I perfectly scrambled a dozen eggs in it.
Then, in a frying pan I started cooking scrapple at a slightly higher than recommended temperature. My dad suggested turn the knob exactly to medium instead of just above it. While I was turning the scrapple some grease popped and hit me just above my lip. There's not much of a visible mark but it does still sting a little bit. I was on the verge of tears at that point and my parents soon took over cooking in cast iron instead of all the little stainless pots and pans I was using. It was quite the experience.

Now I'm doing the sleepy head-bob as I type this, so here is a brief update. So far I've worked a little on two resolutions. Drawing and finishing my wips. I posted a picture that I had started drawing to instagram.

.....the next morning:
I plan on finishing the drawing this weekend. Then no more drawing until all of the works on progress are complete! I finally started working on the NASCAR blanket again. It's a little wavy and off kilter, the blanket itself not just the image, but it should be fine as a blankie!! I think I've just got 16 rows to go!

Happy New Year!

I've still got a little ways to go before the new year, but the pellet stove is blazing, it's 13 degrees out, the Christmas tree is lit! and everyone is ready for the Three Stooges marathon.

haven't really crafted in the past week, I did share a picture of some coasters I made last spring that people seemed to like. That's pretty much it. It was nice to relax after all the Christmas crafting.
Coasters...  I mean, coasters!!!!

Over the past week I have been thinking about some resolutions. I know I really want to get back into drawing this year. I didn't really put any effort into drawing or painting in 2013. That is definitely a skill that diminishes if you don't exercise it often enough.

I've gotten rid of a good deal of my scrap yarn, thanks to that granny square project that didn't even last a month. I have to admit, I'm kind of glad I didn't have enough yarn to make it last the entire year.

Next, this one is a little ambitious, I really, really hope to finish ALL my current works in progress. Off the top of my head I can think of 6 projects that are in various stages of completion. They also vary in size so I'm not really sure how quickly they'll all be completed. I would be THRILLED to finish everything in 2014 that, at the moment, is sitting in my closet in colorful heaps.

Wishing you all a wonderful New Year with many blessings in store!

Still Counting Down

Well, I know, no pictures lately. I'm waiting for the 29 days to be up. Then I shall have some nice pictures of everything I've finished...not 29 pictures, but grouping the similar things, you know?

However, here is my list of thing I've been working on. Updated just 2 minutes ago!

29 Days

29-Doily
28-Lemonade Pie
27-Grocery Shopping, Lobsters
26-Creme egg brownies
25-Blue glitter sweater
24thru19-Doilies
18-Jillnaimo bars
17-Joann fabrics for pillow stuff
16-doily
15-Pillowcase
14-car paintings
13-car painting
12-doily
11-car painting

Let me explain a couple of things.

First of all, I'm trying to crochet 37 doilies. It's an Anne of Green Gables thing.

Secondly, a couple of these days are places I went and things that I made. I was actually out of the house for a good chunk of those days. Contrary to popular belief, I do have a life.

Thirdly! I made Nanaimo Bars and had to keep substituting ingredients. They actually turned out okay, but because I had like 2 actual ingredients I dubbed my version Jillnaimo Bars.

Fourthly...is that even what you say? I am not painting a car. I am making paintings of old cars from vintage ads in an old LIFE magazine that I have.

Lastly, I know I set this up the same as last week's post. I am a list maker. That's whey this whole post is a list and there is a big fat list within the post!

I have so say, it is incredible that there are only 11ish days to go of my countdown! I am ready to see my pal again! :D

PS Thank you to whoever(If you're reading this) favorites the Julie Andrews picture on etsy. It is such thrill to know someone really likes something I worked so hard on! I really appreciate it.

One More Time...

Well, I guess I'm going to blog about what I really do now. I've tried music, posting links to my favorite songs. I tried to post one a day that fit my mood or whatever was stuck in my head. Last post will be a year ago on Thursday. Next, I tried posting about drinking tea. One flavor for every day. Yes, I wanted to try 365 flavors. But I'm not really a tea-holic or whatever. I like it...just not that much, not 365 days much.

I'm going to be a little less ambitious with this blog. It's just about crafts, drawing, knitting, crocheting, and what not. Things I post on my Etsy shop and things I just make for me. I don't know what it will be like exactly...like a diary of my joys and frustrations of making something or a library of tutorials...we shall see. I don't expect to post every day, but at least once every couple of weeks at the least *knock on wood.*

Just for starters, the link... I'm still in the process of getting everything up and running again:
